About Benin

Benin is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. Benin has a population just over 11 million, Benin belongs to the West African Franc CFA monetary zone. The country is roughly divided into two parts. The south is densely populated and the north is sparsely populated depending on subsistence food production with cotton as a main cash crop.

Benin Cotton...

The cotton sub-sector has been, since the 1980s and cotton production is extremely important for Benin. The countries northern and north-central zones present the best agro-climatic conditions for cotton. At the national level, the government depends on it for income from taxes and also for foreign exchange with cotton supplying between 50-70% of export earnings per year.

Cotton is also the motor for rural development and at the farmers’ level cotton is the principal source of cash income. It directly benefits more than 400,000 farmers, and contributes to the monetary income of around 3.6 millions people. Cotton is particularly important in the North of the country, where it is the only cash crop cultivated on a large scale.

Today, Benin cotton farmers say they do not want GMO cotton in Benin, farmers have been growing organic cotton and getting paid a premium for their product. Because of its weight in the economy, the cotton sector has become highly politicized, as cotton growers play an important role in all elections.
